Title: Pontypridd Spoon Post by: ancientpat on February 06, 2012, 04:39:58 PM I recently found a tea spoon whilst searching in Wiltshire which is just a plated one and all the plating has come off but when I looked at the underside of it I found in an oval shaped box that it came from Pontypridd !!
The address in it is H.H.Gibson 30 Taff St.,Pontypridd The present occupants are Ladbrooks but I wonder if anyone knows what it was in the past, perhaps a cafe ? Pat. ;) ;) Title: Re: Pontypridd Spoon Post by: Mike on February 06, 2012, 04:59:38 PM im from pontypridd pat , i will make some enquires with the old folk in the village and let you know

Title: Re: Pontypridd Spoon Post by: Mike on February 06, 2012, 10:56:00 PM heres a very interesting story of the pontypridd spoon .
H H GIBSON of 80 taff street pontypridd , now a family member remembers the shop , a jewelers shop many many years ago she is now 79 years young and actually owns the same spoon in superb condition , i will pop up and get some pics when i get a chance . apparently HH GIBSON would give a set of tea spoons to valued customers as a gift perhaps a wedding gift when rings where purchased there etc . the family members mother who dies some 15+ years ago was married in the late 20's early 30's and owned a set of them presumably from when she got married so there you are , mystery solved Title: Re: Pontypridd Spoon Post by: Chef Geoff on February 06, 2012, 10:58:41 PM A brilliant bit of research Mike, well done mate. Thanks for the info.on the spoon, it's great when someone takes the trouble to pick up the posting and sort out the answer for you. Now you have clarified the mystery I remember the custom of shops giving presents to people who bought items from them as my wife reminded me that she has a set of spoons or knives which her parents were given when they bought furniture at the time of their marriage. Cheers, Pat ;) ;) Title: Re: Pontypridd Spoon Post by: nobby on February 07, 2012, 06:20:30 PM ahh good post!!......I bought a pair of sugar tongs not so long ago with Rhondda Jewellers stamped on.....I wonder if these were a similar gift??
