Title: Re: Any idea? Post by: Techony on November 04, 2011, 05:47:03 PM Look under James I, he had a pomegranite fetish. Handed down from ole'Lizzy.
I think its a half groat of his. Title: Re: Any idea? Post by: jtalbot0001 on November 04, 2011, 05:48:30 PM It looks like a Halfgroat (Two Pence) of king James 1st. One side shows the the rose with crown and the other is a thistle with crown. Looks like mint mark could be a Mullet, in which case it would date to 1611-1612. Very nice!

I suspected it was a James 1st penny but wasn't sure. Looks like it may be a half groat. Title: Re: Any idea? i wasnt paying full attention, but it was somthing to do with a big ding dong between english and the scots about the monetry value of the coins being 12 times more for the same coin....cant remember which way though ;D Title: Re: Any idea? Post by: Chef Geoff on November 05, 2011, 12:04:33 AM Yes late medieval and post medieval Scottish coins were incredibly debased and were worth only one 12th of the equivalent English or continental coinage.
