Title: Pipster and Chef go a hunting
Post by: Chef Geoff on September 05, 2011, 07:47:30 PM
Both Myself and Pipster were working yesterday so neither of us were able to attend the rally :'( But with some hurried arrangements Phil decided that after his fantastic find last week of a new 1p he would travel over once again to find another (something to do with his Black Jack addiction) ::)
So at 8.15 we were tooled up and raring to go, these fields are never going to be bountiful in one days search as they are just too big after one strip it was 12.30 and we headed back to the car for coffee.
First blood had gone to Pipster with a piece of silver walking stick inlay but he was still coinless, I on the other hand had three coins but no silver, 2 of those coins were from a Georgian pocket loss and are still firmly stuck together, which I think is how I'll leave them.
The afternoon started with Pip finding a Roman minim quickly followed by a Grot, so he now had the silver and the Roman >:( Plus he found two lovely Medi pot legs.
But salvation for me was on the horizon in the form of a William and Mary farthing and a few more coppers also a broken buckle that has the loveliest black/brown patina you can get, I can't actually find a comparison yet but have a feeling that it's early.
Phil now ruined everything with a Vicky 4d (joey) dated 1839 :-[  but just then I found my 6th ring of the year which just looked like a copper olive at first but on closer inspection it has makers marks and also Phil wondered whether it could be silver, I quickly rubbished this idea considering the colour of the patina, But Phil I'm sorry, you were right it's silver although very debased. And all to quickly it was 5 o'clock and home was calling, so back to the cars we trudged waving detectors in hope rather than expectation when......Bingo...I had my Roman, a folis of Maximinus.
It was a fantastic day, I've had ones with more finds but less fun, the time just flew by.
Thanks Phil
