Hi Peter,

This has already been up on Handyman's (or should I say Mrs Handyman's) weekend post. I've got it down to being a Henry I Spink 1263 B.M.C.1 Annulets type cut half penny, but I've finally given up on trying to make sense of what little reverse inscription there is for the moneyer or mint.

If you can shed any light on either, I'd really appreciate it, Thanks, (Sorry, this is the best photo I have and the half is already with the FLO.)

Hi Techony,

Great find, and pretty rare.

I agree with your ID, but can't make out much from the reverse. A sharper photo would help, but looks like you'll have to wait for the FLO's ID.

Thanks for your help Peter, if I'm still drawing a blank when I get it back I'll post up a sharper image.

Cheers,

Hi Peter,

Some fantastic news from the P.A.S. on the cut half:

http://www.finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/410745

Quote
Half cut hammered silver penny. Henry I (1100-1135).
Obverse: HNR[ ] Bust facing. Annulet by ears.

Reverse: []NT[] Possibly duble struck and largely illegible.

John Naylor of the Ahmolean Museum states that: "Henry I bmc i (North no. 857), 'annulets' issue, with the visible inscription of HNR. This is a rare but previously known variant, all on this type (see EMC 1988.0207, 1200.1024, 1200.1026 and 2008.0273).

There is a coin of this type with the HNR (EMC2008.0273) which is a coin of Arnketill of Lincoln (the only recorded one of this type by the moneyer) and so the NT might ... relate to that".

This is a find of note and has been designated: National importance

Here is their picture of the reverse. Far better than my attempt:
