Title: "Unusual Tokens" show us yours !
Post by: Stig(The) on January 08, 2010, 09:33:31 PM
As the weather is a bit naff, i thought it might be interesting for all if we posted pics of unusual tokens that have been found.
The "Token" pictured below was one i found awhile ago but was totally black & covered in crud but gave it a whirl in my new ultrasonic cleaner & it`s come up a treat.
I think the inscription on it is self explanatory (French-Tram Token-Dated 31 Dec 1921) & therefore we know what it is but still a very "unusual" find all the same.
I`ve shown you mine, now show me yours!  :o

I thought I'd done an ID for that one Maxine. It's a farthing token issued by Robert Ugden of Minehead. The picture is thought to be a double-edged axe. I don't know for certain, but maybe he was a blacksmith or toolmaker of some sort?

STIG m8 iv got a book on lead tokens and the closest i can get to yours as explained in the book ...............as hop growing and workforce expanded the pieces used on many farms took on a unity of form and lettering that strongly suggested a few makers cornered the market .they supplied utilitarian tallies with lettering and numerals struck in bold relief .made from a harder alloy than in earlier periods ,they could withstand rough handling and were unlikely to be mistaken for incorrect values.............if you cant get it id STIG put it on UKDFINDS DATABASE they are a great site and great help .. ;)

Lundy Island penny that I have posted before. There was a strange story with this in that I read about one on the net the morning I was due to go out detecting with Mark never heard of them before - walked into the field - 5 steps - BANG a Lundy Penny! Very odd morning!

This was a lovely token from the Vale of Glamorgan until I decided to rinse it under water (In my defence I had only had only been detecting a few weeks in fairness :o} The reverse image of Britania literaly came off on my thumb. Real shame and I have never washed a coin or token since.
