Title: I.D on possible roman brooch
Post by: Roman (Ray) on July 13, 2012, 05:35:22 PM
HI ALL.
out today with nobby and ian.i was just about to give up on a 700 acre farm we had been detecting on only for 2hrs..i get board very easy.lol..i just thought its to big and a bit out of the way we not gonna find much.i sat down i was ready to go home.when nobby walked up to me and put this possible brooch in my hand..soon made me come around.we are 95% sure it is..but its not good enough.we need to be 100% sure if we are going to return.if it is a roman brooch that would be great news as we only tried 4 fields there.s another 35 left.lol.
cheers.
ray

Well I was about to be cocky and say I'm 100% sure, but after looking at it....I'm not lol
There is no spring and no place for a swivel pin, so Ummmmmm????
I'll have a hunt through the books but I can't at the moment see how it would work.

On first sight it does look like the remains of a headstud brooch, but no, Sorry guys it doesn't conform to anything I can find but a trip to the FLO might be a good step as it "may" be a type that isn't recorded in my books.

What do you mean? Rays better than me at site surveys. He's the only person I know who can walk (run) from one corner to the other of one field and announce that there is nothing to find on the whole farm  ;D ;D ;D ;D

I found one of those last year, nearly pooped myself when it came out the ground :D! So wanted it to be a roman brooch, but alas was not to be, in the end we thought it might be part of a georgian (or georgian styled) door knocker!
