Title: Permits?
Post by: gfhunter on October 09, 2011, 02:36:25 AM
Hi GFhunter here, a new member from Australia wishing to visit Welsh and English coasts mid next year for detecting trip.  The beaches in Australia are all free and accessible to coin and relic detectorists and I was wondering if any rules apply in the UK as to where you allowed and not allowed to go....?  Also do I need any sort of licence for beach detecting in the UK.  All information will be greatfully recieved.  GF ;D

take a look on the crown estates website, all the beaches are either owned privately or by national trust, or the crown. You do need permission from the landowner to detect on the beaches.

beach permits are only available for crown land.  http://www.thecrownestate.co.uk/metal-detecting (http://www.thecrownestate.co.uk/metal-detecting)

Its also worth taking a look at www.finds.org.uk (http://www.finds.org.uk) where detectorists who find items over 300 years old are encouraged to record the finds on the UK's national database.

Hi GFHunter,

Please also note that you will need an Export Licence in order to take any archaeological items found in the ground, 50 years old and over, out of the country.

Good luck and Happy hunting

Hi GF and welcome to the forum, I hope you have a good time and have some great finds when you come over. As Alan has said most public beaches are owned by the Crown and a permit is instantly downloadable from their website. It may well be only available from a British server so you may have to wait until you get here, but as I say it is instantly generated.
Any other questions please don't hesitate to shout.
 ;)
