Hi Peter,

Your expertise would be very much welcome on this one. It was found in pasture with plenty of Georgian and Victorian contexts. I'm almost certain it's a copper alloy, yet it has the appearance of a european hammie to me:

Many Thanks

Nice find Techony, I found a similar one many years ago which I think was ID'd as a French jetton 14th-15thC.

Thanks Chef,

Following your lead took me to this site: http://www.colchestertreasurehunting.co.uk/J/jettons.htm which looks to be an excellent reference site for Jettons. If I've got the match right, I think I have a 1340 "Shield of France" Jetton.

That is fantastic news for me, especially as I am trying to find links to a medieval fair in the area that it was found. The owner of the pastures will be very excited (nearly as excited as I am, if that were at all possible).

Not sure of the exact ID, but definitely a French 'Shield of France' jeton, 14th-15th century. There were lots of varieties of these, see which you think is closest of these:

Thanks for the confirmation Peter. The Juries out on my side re an exact match. Now I've seen the DFD's, I can't personally narrow the 14th/15th century spread, Oh well, that'll keep the FLO busy. Unless anyone out there has a French equivalent of Spink???

18 May Update... Ok, I'm learning fast here. Now I know that the Jetton is not a coin, but a trade counter (Great news for my Medieval Fair hunt). Some very interesting articles out there on the www on their use. The reference book on Tokens and Jettons was/is written/published by Mitchiner.

Anyone got a copy?
