At 8 this morning I met up with Tafflaff, Roman Ray and Pipster who had made the early morning slog from gods country to the "land of the summer people", to try our luck on the new Fibula field which is only 1/4 mile from Button moon and belongs to the same farmer.
Our last trip to this field was a short one, only managing an hour and a half before evening closed in. So today we had high hopes of bettering our total of Pipster's fibula and my Bullhead shilling maybe some Hammies or as is normal around this area, Roman coins.
Although this field is much quieter than button moon you do get the feeling that a good find could turn up any moment.
Well Buttons were definitely plentiful the total for the four of us being 70 for the day, also musket balls which all of us managed to acquire and these were the big big babies, which takes them way back to the Brown Bess or before and definitely military, all had been fired.
Broken buckles a plenty with the odd old copper coin but Hammies? no, they were conspicuous by their absence.
Pipster did find a lovely example of a Tudor Seal top spoon the bowl of which was (as usual) missing but the handle was complete.
I did manage to winkle 2 Roman grots and a Johillco lead motorbike and Taff managed a nice (part) Sub Roman fibula.
As for little Roman Ray.....no the Roman coin god was not going to lift his curse and little Ray was destined to wander the field looking in vain for that elusive item that would prove his title....AHHhhhhhhhhhh!

Forget the AHhhhh, the little sod only came up with the find of the day at the eleventh hour!

"Chefy what do you think this is, is it American?"
"don't think so Ray, I think it's just a trade token...When I get home I'll trawl the net for you and see if I can find it" (I was feeling sorry for him at this point and a little guilty)

Wellllllllll, I didn't have to trawl very far to find it, It turns out to be a commemorative halfpenny of William Pitt and it commemorates the lifting of stamp duty to the American colonies in 1766. Now why is this special? well it's believed less than 1000 were minted and had it been in extra fine condition it would be worth somewhere in the range of £4000. Rays is only in fine condition but still better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, which is exactly what I wanted to do to him when I found out.

Thats a cracking find Ray - well done matey - very unusual.

I am sure there is medieval in that small field, it just needs winkling out.
