I noticed this last week that Google has started to upload the 1946 black and white RAF aerial pictures. I have been using these for a long time but have had to travel to use them as a research tool in Hereford library. They are an invaluable tool in looking at the British Landscape before the massive acceleration of development after the second world war. They have only got a small area covered at the moment but have just started to edge into Monmouthshire and are the West of England so give it a bit of time and you will find this a very useful tool.

Open Google earth as normal. Click on the clock on the tool bar. The time tool bar will appear. Click and hold the slider back to 1945 the earliest date and you will see. Zoom in a little and the areas covered by the 1945 AP,s will become apparent. Not all UK has been uploaded yet but enough exist to see how much the landscape has changed in 60 years.
OK Pauly.

As an example of their usefullness. Here is a AP of a area where there is a rumour of a DW rally on the 26th September. Quite clear to be seen are at least Six Bronze Age Ring ditches not on any SMR or Coflein so basically not recorded. Definately not on any later AP,s. But it says to me if you don,t look you do not find. When the pics get better definition later on who knows what else will turn up.
