Hi,
Recently i watched an episode of Mudmen with Steve Brooker and his mate Jonny Vaughan. They were lobbing magnets into canals and getting some interesting finds (ie) a cannonball and a tobacco tin containing a gold ring.
Anyway i went and bought myself a powerful sea searcher magnet from e-bay for 20 quid and attaced a nice long rope to it. I have only used it once in a local river at low tide without much success. Has anyone got any success stories from using these magnets and what have they found? I have not given up yet and intend to do some more "magnet fishing" when the next low tides arrive. I also intend to seek out some ancient ponds and give them a go as well.
Regards to all,
Titus Pullo

Hi Titus. I paid about £90 for mine about 15 years ago. I used it once in a canal and found nothing at all. The only other time it was used outdoors was when my partner dragged it around a ploughed field I was detecting in for about an hour. I only use it now when I am sorting out my scrap. I watched a programme once where someone was using one. They are most effective when dropping directly on to an object. Otherwise the magnet tends to slide along an object and lose purchase when reeling in. Despite this you have got me wanting to go out and give it another try.

I once took one on a boating/fishing holiday on the Norfolk broads.
We pulled out of the water half a dozen boat hooks, broken fishing rods and landing nets, keys, loads of knives, forks, and spoons. An umbrella and a glass jar with a metal lid. Inside it was full of plastic fake maggots!!!!!

Myself and my grandson spent 2 hours last year, close to a lock in Oxford found a few spanners and 60pence in 2ps but did once find the outboard we dropped could not pull it up but at least could dive knowing where it was.
