Well, until this morning, I had no idea what this was or what age it was, but I found it on Sunday.

Apparently this is a viking weight (there's an article in this month's searcher about one) - and an email to the FLO confirmed it.

My first viking age find (apart from some possible hack silver.....but that's another story)

Are you far from the Sea with your lovely Viking weight..We have a amazing site close to the sea where pins, weights, gaming pieces, hack silver and coins of the Viking period have been located...Latest thinking that its a out door market and occupation settlement...Its thought that boats berthed on the beach of nearby creek..Keep looking mate Smiley

From a rough calculation it's about 4 miles to the sea, although from some places you can see it.

Is your place the one up in Anglesey? I've forgotten the name of it, but it features in Current Archaeology every so often.  The vikings round here seemed to prefer up the coast or over the other side (i.e Bristol....)

Just as some more info - apparently a viking ounce (called an 'ore') was around 24-26grams. This one weighs in at 120grams or about 5 viking ounces.

it's amazing what info you can find out about things when you know what they are!
