Title: Detector Just Died On Me!
Post by: Jonola (Jon) on October 30, 2009, 02:03:21 PM
Just took my Minelab Quattro out of the shed and turned it on. I'll rephrase that....TRIED to turn it on. Nothing. Not a glimmer. It is an Ex Parrot...I mean detector.

Never had one die on me before!

when things go wrong it's a pain m8, just been given an old c-scope 2200, the fella that gave it to me said he could'nt get it going. Put new batteries in it , it came on and shorted out straight away ???, found there was a broken track on circuit board, in the middle of trying to solder new connection :P.
Anyway good luck Jon, let us know if you get it up and running, Ace ;)

I don't know if it's worth getting it repaired or just buy another one.

Jon, Double check and clean the connectors on the battery holder, both inside and out, and the ones down the handle in the detector, if these have had the battery pack dropped in, instead of slid in, they can stick down and not make proper contact.

My father in law is an electrician so he can take a look at it. If its nothing simple I'll send it to Minelab to repair.

To be honest I have no transport so don't detect more than once a month...or two months! so I spend little time detecting due to circumstances. Not having a detector doesn't impact on me as much as most detectorists  ;)

Jon, if there's a rally you fancied going to and can get transport, give me a shout, if i'm going as well your welcome borrow my backup machine (a Quattro).
I wont be attending the next D.W one though, i've made other arrangements, but i'm probably going to most of the others, including any Cardiff scan or RARE ones that pop up.

Whoops! I posted this in the wrong thread.

Jon
Not sure how good you are with electronics or computers, but  Explorers, Etrac's, Quattro's and safari's suffer occasionally from an easily rectified problem, and that is loose plug connections. If you take off the control panel face plate and turn it over you will see two white plugs, one has a single wire the other has 4, it is usual the single that works itself loose but unplug and plug them both. It is worth checking and cheaper than the post to Ireland.

Cheers for the input lads. Just passed the detector on to my father in law who is an electrician. Checked all the faults you suggested but nothing obvious unfortunately. He is going to give it a thorough once over. Thanks for all the input guys. Thanks for the offer  Salty but I'm thinking of going back to fishing! I'm beginning to think that I'm just not meant to be a detectorist!
