Can anyone explain why there is so much lead in farmer's fields ?

I'd love to know the answer.....

Well a lot of things were made out of lead , spindle whorls , musket balls, toys (soldiers) , maybe some of these items were made out in the field. I'd have though musket balls would have been. Good question though , one i've thought about myself many times.

Nick,i think lead was used years ago a bit like plastic is today,everything that could be made from lead was,all the other bits of waste lead were some times spread on to feilds in rubbish and night soil.If you compare it to modern plastic rubbish  found on farms it's proberly not that much. Smiley

Thanks guys, things I didn't think of.

Lead was probably the cheapest metallic material of the day and easily obtainable, I would imagine. Easy to melt down and very workable.

lead was used to mend pots etc....just melted and poured into the vessel with a leak in it...very useful in it's day...that was long before they discovered "lead poisoning"..... Undecided...byron

hi  nick, lead is a very good sign of age to a field, as i find the whiter the lead , the older it is, true or not im not sure,, but my friends i think would agree with me   happy hunting   mick

Look out for flat lead folded over to,  the romans often put a curse in there,

I haven't heard of that Rob but I agree that the whiter the lead the older it is.
