Morning All
At last I have finally found a silver thimble that has been on my wish list for many years.
I have spent all week trying to find any signs of a hallmark with no joy.
Could anyone help with any information on its age and origin please?
Would it be normal to not have marks, was it made by a ameteur as the engravings would suggest so?
As always your help would be very much appreciated!
Many thanks
Jamie

thats a lovely find jamie, well done indeed.

I'd try emailing the picture to your FLO, as well,  and see what they come up with.

you can always try a neighbouring FLO, and ask them for their opinion.

Beautiful thimble Jamie.   You could ask at your nearest Museum if they have an expert you could refer to.  Even the Essay Office maybe, they have a history section so must have knowledge available.

Nice thimble.

It's late 18th century or 19th century, made by the deep drawing process patented in 1769.
Machine-made indentations at the top and engraved decoration.

Not Treasure but a great find!

Doc...Would it be normal not to have hallmarks?especially if it had been partly machine made?,in factory conditions I guess??
Thanks again!

Its a lovely thimble. Silver items under 7.8 grams don't have to be hallmarked though I don't know what the rule was when this thimble was made. Its a nice item, just enjoy it.
