anyone any idea what the small thingy is with that swivels  its heavy for its size and has a fair bit of patterning on it

Hope I'm not being over optimistic but it could be a seal ring. If it is then it would be very old, circa 1600's I think.

This is a poor comparison but it's along the same sort of idea as the one you've got.   It also swivels and has a different pattern on each side.

on the round bit that swivels there is a pattern on both sides

 i will try to imprint tomorrow on the other piece its a man holding a spear /scepter on both sides

David I think Val could be right and it's a Georgian/Victorian watch fob seal, most from that era weren't actually intended to be used as a seal and so some were smaller and more decorative Wink

I can see the ship with sails on one impression and a rather big man on the other.  I agree with Geoff it was most likely a fob seal and decorative rather than official.  Probably owned by a sea faring gent.

I pondered on the size of the man and it suddenly occurred to me that it could be Neptune.  Nice find David. Maybe next time it'll silver or the big 'G'

With the new machine we've got no excuse, have we  Roll Eyes Grin
