Title: Info on Silver ring please
Post by: Iron Giant on January 18, 2015, 07:33:56 PM
Found this ring and would love to know more about it.

Hallmarks under my loupe from left to right look like: a standing lion then a castle followed by a portrait in a rectangle with the corners taken off  ???

Checked my Spink book which has hall marks and the lion could be Glasgow silver, the Castle could be Edinburgh mint and the portrait may be George III.

The larger mark on its own looks like either another castle or an H and J overlapped.

Same as Mike in that you would need a better photo for a proper id but is the lion passant ie advancing to the left with a paw raised? if so then it will be the English sterling which would make the castle mark Exeter ???

Thanks both, will try for a better pic tomorrow on a better camera  ;)

Yes the lion is facing left, standing on 2 legs with a raised paw and the castle does look like Exeter from marks link. I think the thistle design on shank threw me.

Cheers   8)

I wonder if it might be classed as a signet ring. It's chunky enough and early enough.  Its a beautiful find. Have a look at this link. It might shed a light on it.
