Post by: Roman (Ray) on June 15, 2011, 08:21:11 PM
hi all.
out yesterday on my local mountain ive been detecting for ten years on and off.i have found alot of artefacts and coins on gilfach goch mountain in the past.encluding one hammered.one gold half soverign..nobby only 2 weeks ago found a william 3rd shilling 1692.i have had about 40 silver coins of this mountain in ten years.and also my brother m.c.hammered has had around about the same figure of silver coins as myself.plus nobby and pipster have had a few silvers off it to in the past..but i think the mountain has given me all it had to offer.yesterday i detected it for around six hours and only had i bet just over 10 signals.but one of them ten signals was a nice one.it was an EDWARD VII silver thru-punce 1908.i had.nt had a edward thru-punce so atlest i came home happy.i dont think ill go up there anymore.which is quite sad in a way..lol.knowing ive had thousands of hours of fun detecting up there i think ive done it now..heres a picture of MAYBE.my last silver coin from the majic mountain we.ll see !!

sorry to hear what seems like a good site is coming to a end,but i know the feeling the productive farms that ive just started on now are great for finds but i know {as other good farms in the past} that the finds will gradually get less and less as time passes, but that is the nature of tectin even on ploughland the frequency of finds dwindles with time but we all look foreward to the next piece of land,,, i suggest going up back to your majic mountain from time to time as something will surprise you.

But this mountain is a most beautiful mountain, with amazing views over the lovely welsh valleys. It's popular as a cycle trail.

However its mystical properties makes it a very popular place to go. It's known to be a very important as a place of solitude and meditation.

Down in the town one must visit the valley tea rooms, with its authentic miners memorabilia on show.  One can swap stories with some of the old emphysemia ridden valleyfolk, who spent a lifetime down the pit, removing the earths finest commodity.

A visit to the local pot factory is a must. The sweet smelling scent of the factory floor makes the attraction a must to visit. Add in the fact of good public transport, its close proximity to Cardiff makes it an ideal place to visit. The locals will give you a warm welsh welcome and one thoroughly recommends a personal guide to maximise the time spent on the mountain and in the village. If you get the chance ask for Ray, whose knowledge of the area is second to none. The price is negotiable, but one thing is for certain, you will have a memorable experience

The mountain is very popular with our fellow European visitors, who somehow find its mystical qualities well worth writing home about. Visitors from Poland find the site irresistable.

thats a great write up alan thank you.
as alan stated gilfach goch was a small mineing village.also home to the famous writter.richard llewellyn.who wrote the novel ( HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY ) one of the reasons why so many people walked the mountains in the valleys.its because the side of the mountains where full of coal and slurry.there for people had to walk to the top of the mountains to have fun as there was very little grass in the valley itself.also people would watch the miners changeing shifts.there where men in gilfach who worked in the next valley..and men in the next valley working at the gilfach pits.so they walked over the mountain twice a day.heres a few photo.s of gilfach and the mountain.

Ah yes "How green was my valley" a fantastic film and filled with talented welsh (not) actors ;D
The top 20 acting credits are filled with 6 Irish, 7 English, 6 Americans and one Welshman (Rhys Williams) who ironically went on too relative success playing mainly Irishmen. ;D
