Title: Gold Gold Gold
Post by: waltonbasinman on March 13, 2009, 02:00:07 PM
Having researched Gold hoards from any period that have been found by detectorist or other means one thing has struck me as being quite obvious. Just about all the finds have been from Wiltshire across to Norfolk and Suffolk and i believe it is something like 95%. Correct me if i am wrong though but is not Wales the only source of the raw material other than Ireland within the confines of the UK and the only hoard i am aware off found in Wales was the one at Rhayder. The Anglo Saxon Chronicle tells us that in early post Roman period 418 ad i believe that the British hid their Gold, hence the Roman hoards and the general consensous is the Bronze and Iron Age deposits are symbolic. So in theory if we are producing the material why don,t we find more hoards in Wales. I know we spend more wisely so my missus tells me but are we better at hiding it ?    ??? ???

I believe that Scotland has its seams as well , watching a guy panning there on a tv programme recently, but i do think an awful lot of gold came from Wales

I read an article that says Scotland is panning for gold to make an Olympic medal. Here it is. Just found it if anyone is interested.
