That was a good idea of Geoffs.  There are a load of pics of German helmets with eagles on them. I should think that's about the right size.

I've seen something similar to the dove on a french ormolu clock and
on a garniture, but it's difficult to get a perspective of the size from the photo

That would be a Crosier Geoff  Wink   but as far as I know they always has a stylised hook on the end that represented the shepherds crook.

It could have been off a Mini  Roll Eyes Cheesy

Actually Val Chef is correct - the Virger in a church / cathedral carriers a Virge (they walk in front of the important priests / choir) - the croisier (or croizier) is what the bishop holds as his staff of office which would have a crook on the top of it.
