No problem, it really is a nice find.
Carausius was a "usurper".  You only find his coins in the UK & France iirc (I'm at work so cant really give you anymore detail than that) sorry.
He's coins are pretty rare compared to most roman coins found. there are atleast 4 different varieties of that reverse but I'm 90%...no better make that 80% sure it the one I have posted  ;D
If when I get home I find anything different, i'll let you know.

Great stuff Herbie, I don't actually think the brooch is a brooch ??? Stunning though it is, it has no catchplate or signs of where one was, also the holes on the plate behind the head look more like some sort of fixing.
It's obviously zoomorphic and I'm guessing it's meant to be a griffin, one problem with it being a P shaped brooch is that the head and foot would be upside down when in use? The tooling also isn't sitting comfortably with me to be a brooch or even Roman but if from that period then I would say it certainly originated much further east in the empire.
The truth is I honestly don't know but my guess would be medieval furniture fitting ???
Definitely one for the FLO and please let us know ;)

Cheers Chef, I know what you mean the styling had me puzzled too, I guess I just assumed a brooch because of the shape. Will let the FLO have a look and have uploaded to UKDFD so will have to wait and see.

nice Carausius.

They rate as 'rare' but in this day and age there are a lot more of them about, though not usually in that condition.

If you look at the spread of finds Wales and the West seemed to be quite solidly behind Carausius - there have been quite a few of his really rare aureus found here.

If it is the 'C' mint (the sun is shining in my eyes so it is hard to see) then the current feeling is that the mint was at Bitterne near Southampton.

Looking at it does look like a vessel leg, albeit a bit of a fancy one, thanks for the help guys.
Found this link with something very similar http://www.harvardartmuseums.org/art/304246 (http://www.harvardartmuseums.org/art/304246)

I was going to say as well that for Carausius coins the legend (usually) is either IMP CARAVSIVS PF AVG or IMP C CARAVSIVS PF AVG - yours is the second type which is usually dated to after 289AD (the earlier coins are from 286-289AD), when things had settled down a bit.

In general 95% of Carausius' coins are of the PAX AVG type, so every other type combined only make up 5% of the coins found, although PROVID AVG and LAETIT(IA) AVG are some of the commoner of the remaining ones. The ones to look out for are the helmeted bust types with different obverse legends or the legionary series.

Anyway, nice coin though :)

UKDFD and FLO concur for once  ;D It is indeed a Roman vessel leg in the shape of a Griffin, circa 2nd - 4th century AD.
