The only tip is loads of research as the Saxons left very little evidence on the surface. Saxon pot just crumbles and is very difficult to spot. I tend to use google maps and look for patches of dark soil in the field, then it's just a case of finding the farmer who owns it.
Also find out where your Saxon churches are located, there will be finds in the surrounding fields, if your lucky. I've found about 30 sceats over the years, so I must be doing something right.
