Does it have any hammer marks on it mate. I was thinking a portable mini anvil for Jewellery repairs or manufacture. Over to the doc on this one I think.

or a fastening where the end has been riveted over

dont think its a key mate, more likely a rivet or the like, proberly dates to around 1800's
