NEW MEMBER  -  A little history. ?
Recently joined the best detecting web-site on the internet.
I live over in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, my late Uncle came from (South) Wales, we have
always had our holiday's in Wales for many year's but, for the last 5x years we have been
regular visitors to beautiful Anglesey, just off the mainland - over the bridge.
ANYONE KNOW - if there is a detecting club on the Island. ?
As yet, i have not detected in Wales ?, as it is a bit far to travel from Sheffield but, i am hoping to
attend a Rally next year, when i can get away for a good day's detecting - without the wife.
DETECTING HISTORY.
I have been detecting now for 35 year's - used nearly every detector on the market in my time ,
i am not an expert by no means - you never stop learning - especially with the new computerised
detecting machines.
FINDS - I have found over the year's the usual roman, hammered silver coins, medieval, etc, only
1x worn gold coin, various buckles, buttons, strap ends, and flints of various shapes, along with
bucket loads of assorted roman and medieval  pottery.
I have now got various aches and pains - but still get out detecting - it is a great hobby, you
can always find something -
but, so far it has not made me rich, but, i find it keeps you fit and reasonably healthy after a
full day out in the sun, rain or wind - when i get the chance.
I hope to meet up with some of ''the member's'' in a rally sometime next year now -
all being well.
I'll close now as i have probably out lasted my stay and bored you all - someone  -
please take over ........... thanks.
TO YOU -  who have read this, i will finish by asking (not telling) member's.
Please remember to Fill in your Holes.
I have been on various rallies over the year's  -  but for the Organiser's of all Rallies -
this still seems to be their biggest problem. ?
So please can you please fill them all in.
Many thanks to you all  - and hope you find your Dreams. ?

 - - - -   Remember to .......  Fill in Your Holes ....... as many people do not  -  but, that's
another story ....................... ?

BEST FIND  -  found 14 year's ago now, was my ''Roman Hoard''  of all  (bronze)  roman coins,
approx. total 1,600 in a broken pot bowl.
They where recorded by the Museum, and are now in a museum in South Yorkshire.
DATE  - The roman bronze coins are all dated as:-  Late 4th C .
Thanks for reading my story  ..........  the end.
Your views  - appreciated .........
Summary  .......... i did my best. !!!!!!

Regards,  Yorkshireowl.

Excellent write up , new members are not aways new detectorists.

To find that hoard must have been amazing, and the dream of all detectorist

The advice you give on filling holes is most welcome , and can never be reapeated enough times , those new to detecting need to know the ropes, due to the number of newbies joining recently, and an up coming rally, its timely advice

i home we can meet up on a rally soon
                                                               cheers Mike

Unfortunately it's not just the Newbies that don't fill holes. I met a lovely old fella on the beach yesterday, 85 years old, bless him. He gave me a quick low down on where to start, imforming me he was an expert :-\I noticed he didn't fill his holes but I hadn't the heart to say anything as he seemed to be relying on both detector and spade to stay upright.  Holes apart, Here's power to his elbow and long may he carry on hunting.  I know what you mean Val, but,,,, beach detecting hummm, do you ever see kids filling in the massive open cast mines they dig ?
i still fill in my holes on the beach as a matter of course , but it is a different kettle of fish to field work

Most holes on the beach are filled in by tidal action

though i don't condone leaving holes

Well, Mike, it's like this Grin I get a good signal so I dig a hole. My M6 says 7 and I'm on the spot. I get to the required depth and theres nothing there but I still got the signal so I dig a bit more. AND THEN, the B-----y hole fills up with water Angry and then the sides fall in Angry Would you like me to continue?HuhHuh?  NO, I thought so.
Anyway I've made a rule for myself. If it dont say 2jn I don't dig it.

And Sinky, I was at Saundersfoot, if you want to avoid while I'm there I wont take offence. Grin

im in agreement with the guys above ,there comes a point to hole digging where i think most of us say if its that good a signall at that depth ,how big is it,,,,,if it was a pot of goodies then i would be in the top ten rich list,,,,,,,but remember barrels are that size Grin Grin and most times in this hobby the little things count Grin Grin

Val , just noticed , you use the Matrix M6 ,i use the same machine , i also find the depth meter tells porky pies , on the beach its worse,,,,,, either that , or they are so sensitive they pick up change in an Aussies pocket,,,,, but i think its is the guage

ps , mine going into semi retirement as a back up machine ,,,,, having a shiney new one tomorrow

Yes Mike, I've noticed. A nice shiney G2. Best of luck with it.
I'm getting used to the idea that with the M6 you have to dig deeper than it says. I like to think it's 'cause it's very sensitive but how far is too far Roll Eyes
And for once Pauly I have to agree, size doesn't matter Grin
