Title: Few finds today
Post by: charlieboy on March 26, 2011, 10:58:16 PM
Hi All

Went for a few hours detecting today, stunning day, great to be out - and as a bonus found a few interesting objects. I'd be really grateful if someone could a with the identification of the following:

PICTURE 1
The object on the top left of the first picture is concave (from this side), I took a photo of what I think is the reverse in order to show the 4 'fitting points'. I thought the object on the top right maybe some sort of buckle - from a shoe maybe? Unfortunately the reverse of the 'gold' locket is missing. The item on the bottom right of the picture has writting on it, it has the words watchmaker jewellers  on one side and I think it says Lamas street Carmarthen on the other.

PICTURE 2
Has 2 coins, the one on left is an old 3 pence, unfortunately couldn't find any trace of markings on the other. I think some of the remaining items include part of a thimble, a small button and an old boot nail? i have no idea what the bottom/middle item is - probably a bit of trash.

Hope you guys can help with this

Cheers
Charlie

A nice little collection of finds Charlie, well done you.
The large oval plate is a horse brass. the buckle is a mid 17thC figure-of-eight buckle, the small key is a pocket watch winder 18th-19thC and I would guess the larger coin is a Georgian halfpenny.
The mystery item in the second photograph may be a cover plate from a key escutcheon.

Great, thanks a lot Chef Geoff - that's really informative. The buckle has some age to it then, hope this doesn't sound silly - but would the buckle have come from a shoe? I'm pleased you identified the pocket watch winder - would have been awsome if the pocket watch was still attached  :D

Thanks again
Charlie

the stud looks like a harness stud to me, have found quite a few over the years

the item in pic 2 does look like a keyhole cover or maybe a drop draw handle

still, some nice finds there so well done

Thanks a lot for the reply. I'm suprised how much horse related 'stuff' I seem to come across - I found another object last week which I think was some sort of harness decoration (see attached picture). Guess it shows how much farming methods have changed over the years.
Cheers
Charlie

Thanks guys. Yes Rog I agree - highly addictive!!! I'll try and clean the watchwinder a little more, see if can make anymore of the writing out. Might actually take it into Burgess when I'm passing - it will probably be quite interesting for them to see (or they may think I'm completely barking!!!)  ;D

Regards
Charlie
