Thats a difficult one Phil - and I would say it definately has an age to it.

It looks hand made to me rather than machine made.

Reminds me of the West African ear lobe danglers pupular with tribeswomen over there. I would guess that when it was pliable it may have moved apart and then sprung back together once on the ear. I wouldn't try and part it now as it may be brittle and crack!

I don't however think thats is where it is from - it just reminds me of one, Although that said quite a few slave realted items have turned up in the Vale - Jeff Stock (SCAN} has found a few of the bronze slave money pieces - cant remember what they were called now.

I have seen something similar in a reference book - will get back to you later.

Or a posh bulls nose ring for displaying at livestock competitions!

Its possible on a prized bull to replace its grotty bronze/brass ring.

Very interesting. You look at it and its condition says modern but the technology could be as early as the Iron age. Most intriguing.
