Title: What is your detecting style, grid the field or wander?
Post by: hedgehog on May 14, 2009, 06:34:15 PM
The field I am on at the moment i have detected on once before, I selected areas and slowly worked my way across the field, in the end after many many hours of detecting I had found 33 hammered coins. On the face of it that sounds pretty damn good., but they were all in appalling condition.
My brother came along with me 3 times, about 9 hours total.
1st time a silver seal matrix
2nd time viccy half sovereign
3rd time stunning penny of Edward IV

Which method would you use ? Gridding or having a wander (he was wandering , I was gridding)

I try & search a field following the stripes pattern on the Union Jack!
If this shows little or no results i move on to the next field/location & will try this on the same field after a week or two.
If however finds start to appear using this method i will search as much of the site as physically possible in the available time.

Out and out wanderer. Haphazard and shockingly uncoordinated detecting. Those that have seen me on a rally probably think I have just wandered into the field accidentally!

Don't be fooled by numbers, it took me weeks over the winter the one year and he comes along in 3 short visits and clears up the best finds, mine were all bent, worn and broken!

It was 13 fields at one time (small ones ) and then all amalgamated into one!

MY searching is based on frame of mind and terrain from slow griding to totally erratic meandering :-\ :-\ mole

Gridding sounds tomuch like a regimental not a relaxed hobby horse.

Its been proved that fifty tectors on a given area will still miss targets, dependant on experience etc.

If you grid a field and decide its tected out, you might be leaving goodies for me to find.

I wonder whether its the same, but when i am out, i rarely find in the first hour because of over concentrating, after relaxing, its usual the finds start coming  ;D

Keep griding you will find the best items,i remember being told many years ago that the best way to detect is either to walk backwards or tie your laces together so you can not take big steps.I tend to grid on a beach but i wonder when on a field.keep going and best of luck.

I normally start from gate to gate , then edges, then random.

A bit of both - start with a wander then go on to more concentrated gridding - usually chanting "hammered, hammered, hammered..................." with each swing of the coil ;D ;D ;D

I may be letting some secrets out now, but I always walk the perimeter of a field concentrating on gates in a new field - its obviously the path most walked. Who walks through a crop of fields and where do you think people rested or got paid at the end of the day, certainly not in the middle of the crop.

Then I tend to walk lines until I get bored and then wander aimlessly until I find a hot spot, then I grid for a while, until finds slow up and then I'm off wandering again! Don't tell Borderfox this though! :o - Casa knows where I am coming from!

I also tend to mutter to myself about what I would like to find and bizzarely it does frequently come true. ::) Very Strange.

Cheers
Neil

I mutter a lot as well, though my muttering is normally about the fact ian Gadget has found more hammereds and I've found another lead blob. >:( ;)

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle in the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

For oft when on the couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils
THEN I GET A SIGNAL AND DIG DIG DIG ;D

Pretty much the same as me Neil except the muttering. If the field is flat and has a low mound or a higher stretch in it I tend to head along to that part of the field and grid the higher spot of ground.

kev you could try in ever-decreasing circles its a bit dangerous though. ;D
There is a legendary creature heard of in British student songs called the oozelum bird whose alleged habit is to fly round in ever-decreasing circles till it eventually disappears "up its own exhaust pipe". The symbolic quintessence of utter futility and hopelessness!  :o

would be funny :o last detectorist left in the field is the `detectorist of the day' and can claim all the days finds. ;D
