This was found by myself a few years ago on a predominately roman site...

I thought it was a Georgian rein guide but an respected roman historian is convinced

it is the handle of a roman implement....mirror/knife etc.

35mm long and 25 mm wide bronze with remains of an iron tang at the base.

the decorations appear to be punched into the object your views please.PaulB.

Could it be the very end piece of a Roman Pugio dagger handle ?

keep the ideas coming as this has split the pundits big time...if it is a roman lets say knife handle then a very scarce find indeed...cheers guys PaulB.

Here you are Paul - I knew I had seen something similar in one of my reference books. I know its not the same but style wise there are certainly similarities. Its from Mills' Celtic & Roman Artefacts.

Cheers

Think iv'e seen this one before  Grin
I still think that it has religious connotations and is a mount, (ergonomically and functionally it doesn't make sense as a handle to anything).
I think it is the symbol of Artemis (crescent moon outer , full moon inner and is the right way up in the picture) and it's only purpose is to show that (whatever it was mounted on ) they worshipped and had the protection of that goddess.
We may never know !  Grin

it does'nt seem to have any wear on the inside which you would get if a rope or guide was running through it, i cannot judge the size of the object from the picture but the end of a ritual staff or a sword pommel are my suggestions.

Found these on google, makes me think more on it being a pommel.

Here is another, although this is reversed I have noticed that many swords were made for individuals as one off's with many weird and wonderfull pommel designs.
