Title: Sea angling weight?
Post by: Christoph1945 on April 21, 2014, 08:24:10 PM
Spent a couple of hours on the sands at Talacre the other day and turned up plenty of the same old, same old. WWII projectiles, brass cartridges, and scrap were in plentiful supply but not a single coin was to be found. Worked the wet sand with the EuroAce and the Nel Tornado coil fitted, but the detector still didn't like the wet sand and I had to knock the sensitivity down four notches,

Had there been any coins at around four to six inches below the surface of the sand, I'm sure that I would have found them. I eventually grew tired of digging shrapnel and other WWII oddments and decided to call it a day. Slowly working my way off the beach, I continued to detect, and this little critter popped up. Initially, I thought that it looked to be rather interesting but then decided that it was probably some sort of sea angling weight. Perhaps one of you guys that could confirm if it is a sea angling weight?

That's a bit different Chris.  Interesting.  Can't see it being a fishing weight, where would you tie the twine. ?

What's that at the side of it ??

Hi Val,
the thing at the side is a 20p piece. The idea was to give some sense of scale, but the lighting is rather poor. The little bump that you can see looks like a small copper rivet and perhaps there would have been a loop there for fishing line to go through.

            The item is stamped      PAT
                                                CARTA
PEND     which I assume is " Patent pending " and " CARTA " may be a company name. Rather odd that someone would take out a patent on a sea angling weight!  :-\

Val

I been fishing for over 40 years VAL and I would never have guessed it to been a weight either from the pic.  Never seen them before.

Well, not as daft as you may think, Chris.  The traditional weights are a pain in the butt.  That triangle shape would be a good idea, though it would still drag and snag but maybe not as much as the others.

Unless it's fairly new then they obviously didn't catch on.  Wonder if there's any way to check patents !!

Thought the coin was a secret Hammie you weren't telling about. ;)

And I see that the swivel was also broken on yours Doug. Perhaps there was a fault in the design and that's why patent never really took off.

that weight was designed to sit on the bottom, and not roll around like a standard ball or tear drop style weight,

the style is still used today with a flat weight and what is known as a running ledger style, where a long piece of line is attached and the bait on the end, can flow naturally on the bottom of the sea bed

here is a similar one

Thanks for the link; I never realised that there were so many different types of lead weights!  :)

Mystery solved Chris as soon as I could make out it's shape I thought of a pyramid fishing weight well found will add to your lead scrap bin  ;)
