Title: 250912 - well that was an interesting field
Post by: handyman [Alan} on September 25, 2012, 02:23:12 PM
After negotiating the watling street rush hour traffic jams, my colleague and i finally made it to a new field of soft rape stubble. Not expecting much even though it was only 2 fields away from watling street itself, we did see some roman pot sherds during the initial fieldwalk.

Well ... with expectations of roman, were we disappointed when nothing turned up?  Nope, not when you see the range of finds covering at least a 1000 years.

2 questions,

1. the large lump of lead with a cross on the front will fit easily into the palm of ones hand. The reverse suggests that there was a fixing for it. Could it be  a large pilgrims badge?

2. Is the hammered coin, a penny of Edward IV?

Cheers & thanks for looking

Well done Alan, a nice little collection of finds ;)
The hammy can't be Eddy I but could be Eddy III onwards.
How big is the lead lump? I have my doubts that it's a badge as the "cross" is a little crudely done, if that's what it is.
Oh and your William is a halfpenny not a penny ;)

WOW what a cracking button. Bet that gave a good signal, what's it made of ??

Now I'm really going to stick my neck out. I think your Hammered is Henry 6th, First Reign Rosette-Mascle Issue penny (1427-30) York Mint Mullets by the Crown.

According to my I.D from Tony Claytons site.  Now if I'm wrong you can have a good laugh and then remember to be polite. ::)

The lead could be a 'palm guard'?

Thank you for your comments everyone, much appreciated indeed.

Chef -- thx for correcting Willy P to Willy halfp.   ;D ;D
The lead fits the palm of the hand perfectly, so mike could be on the right lines with a palm guard. Though, i guess i got some research to do to see if palm guards had designs on them. I don't see why not.

Val, thanks for the comments re the hammered coin, i can see where you are coming from. Unfortunately thats all we have to go on as the other side is completely worn.

Cheers everyone

Palm guards were usually smooth on one side, the side that fitted the palm, and had a recess on the other.

thanks for that input AJ, much appreciated. Any ideas what the lead object could be then?

cheers

Thanks Alan - I don't think we'll ever know for certain - could be Edward III/IV, Henry VI, etc.
