Post by: nobby on June 17, 2010, 08:34:23 AM

Nobby, a good question and the simple answer is you can't without X-ray, the amount of Iron artifacts that are either dug up and hedged or discriminated out is probably frightening.
Most Roman items that we find regularly, brooches, belt fittings etc were made just as often in Iron, but we discriminate them out plus they corrode.
So in this case ignorance is bliss, even if slightly irresponsible.

Hi Nobby

Welcome to the forum ;0)

Like Alan has suggested a good idea would be to Join a  local Metal detecting club where you could show your finds to others this a can cost as little as £8 a year Debending where your based.

Its an unfortunate fact that something that once was a stunning ferrous artifact, can be turned into an unrecognisable rusty lump with in a few decades.
That dreading tin worm has got a lot to answer for lol

Happy hunting !
