(http://i688.photobucket.com/albums/vv247/imnotin/2Hammered027.jpg) Found these two hammered coins that seem to be Edward pennies. But which Edward? Can anyone tell me how to tell the difference between Edward 1st, 2nd and 3rd? Title: Re: Which Edward? Title: Re: Which Edward? Post by: The Doc on May 21, 2009, 09:47:20 PM Second one I'm not sure about because the crown isn't clear, but I think is probably Edward I again, maybe Class 10? And Canterbury mint.
There isn't one sure way to ID these coins. Things that vary are the crown shape, the mint mark (usually a cross of various types), the style of lettering, the words in the legend, and the "drapery" (neck or collar). If the bust has definite shoulders, then it's not Edward I or II. This book is excellent for Edward I and II pennies: http://www.galata.co.uk/0002.html (http://www.galata.co.uk/0002.html) Title: Re: Which Edward?
