My detecting buddy is on a roll he's found some great finds lately, this lovely hammered and a copper axe head?
Can anyone clarify if it is a copper axe and what coin and date it is please.

Looks like early bronze aged flat axe to me (awaiting to be corrected by chef :) )

Just to clarify for me..the axe would be bronze not copper?

It would need spectral analyses to be certain but as it's from the UK, and from the west side, then it's 99.9% certain to be a copper alloy rather than pure copper, there was a Copper Age (Chalcolithic) but this was very short lived and the time in took for these "fashions" to reach these shores from Iraq/Iran and the Balkans the Bronze Age caught up with it especially as Britain was one of the best resources for tin ;)

The earliest Irish type of flat axes were copper only and the process of adding tin to create bronze probably was done in France later ...As two ores were shipped into europe and made into continental type bronze weapons..Then shipped back to the British I
