Well after spending all day in fruitless detecting. I decided to turn the machine off and have a gander at a drainage ditch that had been put through the field and as I was bending over looking at some pottery, I looked up and 4 feet further on was a little disk.

So not a completely waisted day but I needn't have taken the detector lol

All I can say is WOW, to find a Roman Silver that's right on top of my wish list is one thing, but to find it not using a detector, well that's just not fair!! But good on you Chef, least you spotted it!! Wonder if the drainage ditch has disturbed something greater like a nice pot of coins Smiley Well done for finding it once again!

Yes that's the before and after (or the other way around lol) Don't faint but I put it in my old faithful Swarfega metal cleaner....I know, I know. lol.
When some finds come up especially out of the clay they have what can best be described as concretion or calcium build up on them and it won't shift no matter how long you soak them. But 30 secs in the cleaner (it can be watered down) and it just dissolves. It is mainly phosphoric acid but is quite harmless to the skin though I wouldn't recommend bathing in it Grin
