perhaps some of the experts can shed some light on this...Ray and I where discussing yesterday the lack of william IV coinage we have yet to discover?? we ve found a few geroge 3 now, then it seems to skip a couple of generations, george 4 - william , and we re straight on to victorian?

answer is easy ,if your names william and its bad enough having to run a country with your mrs,the last thing you want is to get down the pub and see her face on your coinage when your trying to sink a few pints......so thats why we find so few william and marys Grin Grin

Wrong William Paul, That's William III.
Rob I think the best reason is that he was only on the throne for 7 years and his coins were minted even less e.g. copper pennies were only minted for 3 years.

Hi Nobby

You think thats confusing, don't try family history. I did and just on one side of the family from 1655 to the 1900's I have William x 10,  Thomas x 10,  Joseph x 11,  John x 15,  James x 10, and so on. Now that was confusing. it seems to have been the tradition to name all 1st born Sons after the dads so if dad had 4 sons they in turn called all the 1st Sons the same as thier dad. Was it lack of imagination or what Huh

I like Paul's explanation even tho he got the wrong William  Grin Grin

William is an old Germanic/Saxon name meaning "Determined Protector", Ive no idea why William the Bastard (Duke of Normandy) was called William
I think i read somewhere that the Normans were descended from Vikings, maybe they Picked up the name on they're way South Grin.
