Hi
I'm Roy and new here. Been detecting in Norway for sometime, and metal-detecting is more a lift-stile than a hobby.
The old rich history you have "over there" fascinates me, and I would love to get to know someone in Wales, Scotland or The North Isles as "a detecting buddy". I plan to take a trip there this spring/summer if possible. I have a tight budget so I need to get to know the most affordable accommodations, transports, etc. And I also need to learn about the laws considering metal-detecting ?
Anyone ?
I could do the same for those of you interested in coming to Norway. I have permits for many great sites here. And can also be helpful when it comes to accommodation etc.

Roy

thank you all for a great welcome. Appreciated Smiley
I live in Trondheim, in central part of Norway. We also have some great medieval and Viking history here. But Roman objects are spares and is one of the things I would like to find and dig up. Old medieval coins are also very high on my "want-list" Smiley

Two months ago I did the find og a lifetime here in my home-town. 3 medieval coins corroded together. Oldest a penning from Magnus Lagabøte 1263-1280, the "reverse" a penning from Eirik Magnusson. The one in the middle will remain a mystery I'm sad to say. It was considered to be one of, if not the! archaeological find of 2013 by the university-museum here in Trondheim. This didn't help on my addiction Smiley

Anyway here's some pictures of the coins for those who are interested.

Welcome to the Forum Roy.   What a wonderful find and so close to home.  Many of the members here, including me, would be very happy with a find like that because we don't all find very old coins. In fact many of us never find very old things. It depends a lot on where you live.
I live in South West Wales and I think most of the people in historical times were very poor. Also pre Roman the Tribe that ruled here didn't have coinage. Good finds are very rare but it's still a good hobby.

Thanks a lot Val.
Yes I guess I was very lucky stumbling over these coins. As to my knowing, there are only 22 known Magnus Lagabøte-pennings found, and almost all of them found under excavations of churches. So that makes it even more special. Many people her in Norway, who's been detecting for many years, had said that this was a find of a lifetime. But, I'm also very pleased finding the more "common" stuff. I always had a urge to see more of the UK, because my grandfather was British. Going digging new places are a trill almost no mater what pops up. Even the garbage is new and different from what I'm used to. So I look forward to swing my coil over British soil, if I get the chance  Smiley

A wonderful find and worthy of the praise. It is good that your find was rewarded in such a manner by the museum. Is there general acceptance of metal detecting by the archaeological bodies in Norway?

thank you cardiffian.
Well to your question there isn't a clear yes or no. There are several museums in different parts of the country, and it seems like there are "two camps". The strong anti and the more pros when it comes to metal detecting, if you get my meaning. In central Norway we are lucky to have a more open and accepting (younger maybe?)  archaeological community. Here we are even included sometimes in some of the work on excavation sites. In my local club we even have a archaeologist from the museum in the board. That's helpful Smiley
In other parts of the country some people in the academia is trying to stop or forbid use of metal detectors, as is the case for Sweden and Spain.
So, we really don't know what the future going look like. But I'm an optimist, because of the cooperation and creditability towards the museum we have built here in Trondheim.

It just needs a metal detectorist now to find an equivalent of the UK's Staffordshire Hoard. That would surely convince a lot of the neutrals to turn pro and strengthen your cause. I guess you are in a better situation than some countries as you can at least detect without looking over your shoulder.

I think it's just a matter of time before some big important finds and treasures are found here,  thinking of the rich old history and that most of the country is rather "undetected" and still relatively few people are using metal detectors here. But the interest for it is gloving Smiley
