Finished work at 9am and home in ten minutes a quick change of clothes, flask of tea, sarnies and out the door by10am, at the field by 10.45, Smiley weather dry conditions good, new batteries, boots on and then the old boy who lives in the cottage next to the field comes out and spends the next 40 minutes talking to me, Cry he used to work on farms in the area so whilst it was interesting to hear what he had to say I just wanted to get on the field as I had to leave by 2pm for work again Angry my first signal took nearly 20 minutes but it was a hammered penny long cross, not in the best of condition but happy to find it. The following signals produced a few buckles and a strap end and the usual lead pieces we all dig up constantly, I then moved to the part of the field were I found the saxon buckle on my last trip, this area of the field is where the soil changes from black with pottery spread around to a more chalky light area, where generally signals are fewer and far between which leads me on to my next signal and at a depth of 4 or 5 inches and upon turning the soil over up popped a cracking saxon coin still stuck to the soil hence the picture, I immediately identified it as a sceat it appeared to be in lovely condition and great detail, well a cuppa tea called for now and a closer look back at car, I have found a few saxon coins before but some time ago so this was a very welcome coin. As time was getting on and  very reluctantly I had to make a move and leave, once again giving me a very good reason to return to this interesting field another day. At this point in time I have not positively identified the coin it looks like a continental sceat c 695-740, no 840 in spinks but mine has a slightly different design? any one fancy a go at an id please Wink hope you enjoy the pictures.

Enjoying reading this unfolding story of a field.

Be great to have a total shot of all the finds when it becomes undetectable due to grass length or crop.

I can only dream of a field as productive as that at the mo. Oh, lovely sceat by the way!

Keep them coming

Hi Termite, not sure how long you have been detecting, I suppose I have been detecting since the late Eighties and consequently I have accumulated quite a bit of land, as am sure has many other detectorists, that said you do not need 1,000s of acres what is important is to try and secure some quality fields that can produce the finds. Personally when am driving around I am constantly looking at fields around Villages and Hamlets particularly close to Churches and ploughed if possible but not essential, that’s the easy bit, you then have to find the landowner and acquire permission, as difficult as it is a direct face to face approach is best preferably on a nice sunny day when they tend to be in a better mood as most of us are;D most are friendly believe it or not: o.
Some people write or phone farmers and whilst this certainly works for some people it’s a bit hit or miss, I know some of my farmers get request this way and has not the time or can be bothered to reply. I guess I’m trying to say do the leg work, persevere and  be committed and give it time mate, oh yeh!! And you need an ever so little bit of luck Wink Wink Wink Wink I hope I have not come across as trying to teach granny how to suck eggs, best of luck and mite see you at a DW rally some time.
