It seems ages since the last DW rally so it was nice to see everyone once again when we all assembled at a location in darkest Somerset .

The day started off a little drizzly and we all got a little damp during the initial briefing to let everyone know where they could detect and which parts of the farm were out of bounds. However the weather improved as the day went along and it turned into quite a pleasant sunny afternoon. The farm was a mixture of pasture and ploughed so there was something for everyone.

First to come up with a decent find was Zeus who unearthed a really nice silver Victorian Groat which made a few people jealous, including me. He also found a toothed object which we assume to be some kind of horse comb.

Baden was next to weigh in with a 'partifact' - part of a decorated bronze shoe buckle. Mr Mayo contributed  a nice silver threepence of 1935 whilst Gijan started off her day with a nice rowel shaped horse brass and Legio11augustus had a livery button.

One of the more unusual finds came up mid-morning when a hunting horn was found. I'm not sure whether it has any great age to it but it's the first time I've heard of one of these being found.

The first Roman coin of the day made an appearance when Daveha found a nice bronze with a helmeted head on the obverse. A little encrusted but it should clean up well.

After an epic struggle bigxhoni managed to put a large metal and glass objects out of the ground which you may be some kind of clock or dial.

Rookypair came up with what appears to be a contemporary forgery of a bullhead shilling which should've been in silver but was found in copper alloy. An interesting find.

The weather got better as the day wore on and whereas a lot of the people rushed to the ploughed fields at the start of the day most people gravitated towards the pasture as the day went on and this is where the majority of the finds came up.

As happens with a lot of rallies the better finds came up later on in the day. Zeus had the first hammered of the day - a Lizzie threepence of 1570 together with an unusual copper alloy 'Golden Star' artefact.

Further Roman coins were found later in the afternoon and then what was probably the find of the day came up - a large gold signet ring found by marknewbury1.

Altogether it was a pleasant day with good company and some decent finds. Thanks to Lorraine Stanley for all her help setting this rally up, and Rob as usual and to Da Monkey for helping out on the day.

Geoff

Many thanks for a great day out, managed to meet a few new people I haven't seen before. The Roman coin looks like Constantine and the other side would be a Globe above an Altar, very nice, looks in good condition too. I would love to know what the other Roman coins found date wise are. The best find artifact wise I think is that Horn, it looks silver so should easily be datable, there must be hallmarks on it somewhere?

Very nice write up Geoff, thanks to all the organisers. Lots of good finds winkled out and it was nice to see everyone again. It was good to be mentioned in despatches again - even for a forgery!! Shocked
