Title: Lead Face
Post by: celticspikey on November 30, 2016, 10:20:28 AM
Found on a roman site, at first I thought a palm guard? until I cleaned of the mud and uncovered what you can see, then I thought it could be a lid of tobacco jar?........now im thinking its Celtic/Early Roman. Over to you guys.. :-\ ::)

I would have gone for Roman initially, but it sort of has a medieval look to the face , to me anyway. But only my opinion nothing definitive. Lovely find though.

Love it!

Reminds me of a Roman Gladiator face guard. I know it can't be due to its size, but souvenir of the games were made and sold. One for a FLO for sure.

I'll get my coat and order my taxi!!!!!!

Well here's my hat going into the mix. My initial thought was, the lead patina did seem right for Roman. Then sat looking at it for clues. The hat or hair gave me a thought about 'Roundheads' and here's what I found.
'Roundheads, not as commonly thought, named for the helmets they wore but for the 'pudding basin' haircuts favoured by the puritanical protestants of the time '
Is there any other evidence of Civil War activity in the area.

Hi Val, appreciate your thoughts, yes at it happens as with many other places the civil war armies were passing through or relatively close by at least? No fighting thou as far as I'm aware.
The field I found it in has not produced any thing other than early to mid Roman finds, I've only searched it a few times, due to where it is and its surroundings it just feels a bit special....Any way my thoughts are still possibly Celtic or at least early Roman, but hey like all of us detectorists Val, it's a learning curve I'm sure you would agree  :) and I stand to be corrected and happy to be ..... ;) ;)

Ok Paul hears my penneth....to me it certainly reminds me of a early Roman face mask or even gladiatorial Rome.
Could it be a gaming piece from that time, after all they spent a lot if time in occupation and had leisure time, and board games....just a thought, fabulous find...👍

Yes I must admit I like the sound of Neil's idea more than mine but as I'd already come up with the idea before I saw Neil's post I thought I'd throw it into the cooking pot.
Be interesting to hear what the FLO thinks.
