hi ya  guys went to a new farm today and after about 3 hours i was wondering why i was only pulling up georgian stuff{coins,lead seals}e.t.c so then the farmer tells me he only ploughs 6 inch deep, why plough so low?? does anyone know the reason why some farmers only plough 6 inch?.

Probably depends on what he intends to sow on the plough soil m8  ;)

a matter of economics  -- deeper ploughing requires more diesel.

you will get deeper ploughing if they intend to seed potatoes.

It's to save money..............and they don't plough as such, they "disc".

These are steel discs in a line and turn like a corkscrew. They don't go down that deep compared to
proper 'ploughing' which is more of a dredging action that can turn up down to 18 inches.

It's all down to economics.

A farm I go to has ploughed this year rather than disc. As it's gone deeper some more Roman stuff
has come up, whereas the last years not a lot has been brought up.

I think the last time he ploughed was about 8 years ago when he had spuds in the field when they
fetched a decent price.

This year I think he's planted rape? (large bean type seed)

As anything, it's all about money. :'(
