Title: Re: new farm Post by: handyman [Alan} on March 19, 2010, 09:03:35 PM a matter of economics -- deeper ploughing requires more diesel.
you will get deeper ploughing if they intend to seed potatoes. Title: Re: new farm Post by: rjm on April 23, 2010, 11:29:54 AM It's to save money..............and they don't plough as such, they "disc". These are steel discs in a line and turn like a corkscrew. They don't go down that deep compared to proper 'ploughing' which is more of a dredging action that can turn up down to 18 inches. It's all down to economics. A farm I go to has ploughed this year rather than disc. As it's gone deeper some more Roman stuff has come up, whereas the last years not a lot has been brought up. I think the last time he ploughed was about 8 years ago when he had spuds in the field when they fetched a decent price. This year I think he's planted rape? (large bean type seed) As anything, it's all about money. :'( |
