Post by: simon c on March 10, 2009, 06:06:42 PM Thank's for the replies,i appreciate your comments,and as a few have suggested i'm inclined to agree with it being a contempary forgery,so i used the foil method to try and clean it up a bit more,and check if it was silver or not,it reacts with the foil giving the rotten egg smell,and allso gave of heat during the reaction, it burnt through the foil ,my fingers are still sore,so i would'nt expect a base cored coin to do that or is that normal,far better reaction from this than any hammered coin i've tried this on.Adies guess at 2nd centurary may well be right,i have had a few bronzes from the same site which were id'ed as 2nd centuary.Thanks again for your replies.

Post by: hedgehog on March 10, 2009, 06:23:53 PM Hiya Simon, I was on a very good site several years ago , I think it is a silver denarius of Trajan, I was lucky enough to find about 90 different ones over a period of time. This effect had occurred on some of the silver coins, I believe that it is a silver chloride that attacks the coin and basically causes it to crumble.

Roman silver coins (and Celtic) can be very fragile and may shatter if dropped. We had a lovely silver unit shown by a member in Cardiff Scan a year or two ago, which he unfortunately dropped later and smashed :'(
