Title: Silver pendant declared treasure - Pembrokeshire.
Post by: Neil on November 14, 2008, 10:21:21 AM
BBC News - 29 November 2007

A 500-year-old silver pendant depicting images from the Bible has been unearthed on farmland in Pembrokeshire. The silver pendent has several Christian engravings.  Metal detector enthusiast Kenneth Lumm discovered the artefact in a field near Kilketty in January this year.

No value was placed on the item but a treasure trove inquest at Milford Haven heard the National Museum of Wales was interested in acquiring it.

Coroner Michael Howells heard coins dating back to the reign of Edward II had previously been found in the field.

Experts said the pendant, which includes an engraving of the Passion of the Christ, had been dated to the early part of the 16th Century.

Mr Lumm found it about four inches below the surface of the field.

As it was a valuable object over three years old, the coroner said it was treasure, and Mr Lumm would be entitled to a reward.

As it was a valuable object over three years old,
Hmmm , i wonder if that should read over 300 years old,

I think you are right Alan! Little slip there I failed to spot.

As long as people like reading them, I'll keep posting them as I have plenty more. Although I am rationing the site to a one a day at the moment! ;D        I try to spread the stories from around Wales as well, so that there is no South Wales (where I live) bias. Glad you like them.

Two common themes though in each post:
1) All outstanding finds.
2) All in Wales.

As Phil says, how people can say they won't detect in Wales as there is nothing to find is beyond me - good news for us though!

Cheers
Neil

That would certainly grace my display case.

After all the luck I've not had lately I think it's time for me to forage over the border and get me some of that treasure  :D
