Found this the other day - I can't find anything like it and can't imagine what it's for.  Anyone got any ideas?

It's a bit small for a powder holder - it's less than 2 inches long.  It looks as though the 'wire' at the top may have broken off at some point, moved down the artefact a bit on one side, then re-attached itself by corrosion.  The field it came from has turned up objects all the way from Roman to modern day so there's no help there.
