Title: Re: Barrel Keys Post by: Chef Geoff on July 01, 2010, 04:56:19 PM Paul its the shape and matching of the key and keyway that makes the difference, the sleeves covered the tap spigot and you needed a key with the correct shape to fit through the sleeve to be able to turn it on. It was in the days when beer or cider (water was still unpurified and dangerous) were part of the workers daily refreshment supplied by the employer while out in the fields and it is thought the lock was to stop workers having a crafty pint when no one was watching.
