Title: Not a lot!
Post by: Chef Geoff on July 21, 2011, 06:39:34 PM
Had the day off today but I was under strict orders to concentrate on DiY :'( But I did manage to escape for two and a half hours this afternoon and so headed to an as yet undetected field that Taff, Ray and I have got permission for. The ground is still a little to dry for my liking which was reinforced by me being able to run 32 sens in manual with no disc :o
and it was still quiet.
Well I had very few diggable signals in my time there and only 4 are worth showing.
The first was a strangely shaped pot leg with a lovely patina that took some digging and eventually revealed itself at 16"(that's two spade depths that's how I know). Then came an unfortunately bent square pewter lid from what I presume was a snuff box. Next up was a WWI General service button in quite good condition and lastly just as I had given up and as sods law often does a Cartwheel penny from just behind the car ::)

I'm sure you will Jassy soon enough. I was running full sens in manual when I found this one and at only 5" it sounded as if I had found a dustbin lid :D

Well at least you found something worthy of note. Well done Geoff.

Actually I think my afternoons effort is worthy of a note. You had your Button Oak I have my field of washers. ::) and I didn't dig them all.

And not a coin in sight. :'(

Nice going Geoff, at the depth you found that pot leg, I bet at first thought you were thinking it may be Bronze Age! If you're finding things that deep, keep going, you bound to find something decent at that depth! And you were running full sensitivity by the sounds of what you said, that's exactly how I came across my axe head!

Thanks for rubbing it in Jan. :'( :'( Wish I was a bit closer.

No Ray. Can't give up that easy. I'll try the GOOD part of the field tommorrow. ;D
And yes Geoff, every one gave a cracking signal. Too good not to dig. You know what they say,  It's the one you don't dig. Or something like that.
Must admit I had one bit of luck. I found one of those wire loop safety thingies that you attach to trailers which was quite new so I cleaned it up a bit and returned it to the Farmer. Smiles all round.
Oh, my aching back.

Well done Geoff. Not bad for a couple of hours work.

Hi Jassy, I found my first cartwheel at the Glastonbury rally. They really are a nice coin to add to your collection. I was facinated by the history of them. Im sure you will find one soon.

Thats one hell of a POT leg Geoff. Looking at it again this morning I wondered if it was off a fire basket.
Whatever, it must have been very impressive. You'll have to see if you can find the rest. :o

well done Geoff- laughed again - spooky - because guess what I found two days ago - a servicemans button, exactly the same as yours. LOL but I was in the wrong field !!  ahhhh  :o

Its how I found the little silver thingie because I was on the "wrong" field (next to the fields I am allowed on and didnt realise).   famer came flying across the fields, me thinking how quick can I get to the car if its a nutter, and he was not happy to say the least.  Apologising as much as I could and thinking of digging a hole big enough to fit into it, I rushed off his field, after giving him the button, which he said "I dont want that".  opps.

So left the only area I have to detect on and decided to go to the farm to play with the horses and just scooted around and found the silver thing.

Val - What also made me laugh was the penicillin tubes.  OMG they give the most amazing sound and bars on my detector, luckily they are plastic today so once you've picked them up they are not going to be replaced by this year's batch.

The other bug bear is gun cartridge tops.  Again a superb signal and around us loads and loads of shooting goes on.

Take my hat off to you to dig so many of the washers though - I think I would have been crying each time I dug one of those up !!

Nice horseshoe, dug up a medeival one the other day - really pleased about that.

HA needs a prod in the right direction me thinks !

Take care

h

Well, so much for the brave idea of doing 'the good bit' of the field this afternoon. I took the dogs out this morning for a LITTLE walk that turned into a big one, with lots of fun on the beach, and a brisk walk back to the car 1 1/4 miles away.
Got back, sat and had a sandwich at 12.45 and the next thing I knew it was 3.35. Must have needed it. ::)
Ah well I WILL do it tommorrow.

Val
