I know of a small hoard of Silver Denarii found a few hundred years ago, i found out about it when i was researching the Vale History, but never could pinpoint the exact area,
obviously there were no detectors then so there is always a chance of a few stragglers as there was no mention of a pot being found.
Well ten years later and all forgotten about, when today a local historian friend of mine gave me a pile of information on finds in my area and habitation, and what do you know smack in the middle was information on this Hoard including a piece about the coins being found in a quarry, well this got me thinking, and all i could remember was a local farmer telling me a few years back about a quarry on his land, and that it might be worth a look.
Well i got onto the net and found this quarry, which was actually an old kiln, then i thought to myself that there are many of these kilns about in the Vale and the coins could have been found in anyone of them.
Anyway i had another look at the paperwork and noticed the grid reference numbers, checked them against the kiln and BINGO.
i could not believe that i have had permission to detect there for ten years and have not been near the place.
Well i know the weather is rubbish at the moment but i will be rooting about in that hole as soon as it stops raining, i just hope the farmer has not filled it with rubbish like they normally do.
I will let you know if i have any luck.
Steve.
