Soo much Iron and so little time!!

« on: March 24, 2011, 07:38:28 PM »

My first proper go with a detector on Monday 21st March.Found a couple of things in a couple of hours. The above item measures 51mm long by 11mm at its widest point. There is some plating/gilding on it some say gold some say silver. The fastening ring is certainly iron and was intact when dug up but has since broken(heavy hands strike again). It was taken from a front lawn of a mansion built around 1900 which used to be a smallholding with servants.I'm guessing its some sort of pendant or possibly a decorative hanging on something else.Any more information would be most welcome.

if it falls into the range of older than 300 years, please record the find with your local Finds Liason officer for your county. [Details on your county council website.

If in doubt of any objects age,  always hand it in for checking..

I would say it's a draw handle. They used to have dangley ones on early 1900's furniture. I remember my Gran had a chest of drawers with thingies like that.

Hi Doc, here are the two additional images you suggested. Is it a draw handle as some suggest? It is quite heavy for its size but don't think its a lead base. There is some greening at the point if that helps.thanks..
