HI EVERYONE.
a little topic on maundy sets of money.
i often wonder why everytime ive found a maundy set coin.its allways the one with a 3 on it (threepence) and everyone i know who as found a maundy coin has allways been the (threepence)
why are the others so rare the 4-2-1.is there a reason for this rareness.lol.
why are they so hard to find..im sure there are a few people out there who have found them with the 4-2-1 on them.
but no matter what reign they are such as elizabeth.georgean vicky.they allways seem to be the (threepence) that we find.WHY.
please feel free to tell me.im really interested to here you comments on this subject.
thank you all.

Some interesting Reading for you Ray
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Threepence_%28British_coin%29

Im not Sure why the Thrupence was so popular, but after a quick read of Wilko it turns out the Thrupence was the most the most used.

all the best Phil

The accepted reason that we only find the 3d is that the Maundy sets remained virtually unchanged since the reign of Charles II up to 1970, comprising of 1d, 2d, 3d and 4d all being made of silver. Also the design copied that of the general coins in circulation for that denomination, and it was the stopping of the relevant denomination that also stopped the Maundy version from being in use, lost and found by us, ie the silver penny in 1760, the 2d in 1848 and the 4d in 1887, but the 3d continued in circulation until 1947 so the Maundy version was spendable and therefore used longer.
