I found this at the Scan rally last sunday, at first I thought it was a sprag which is hammered into the end of a hammer handle to hold the head tight but it seems to be made of a copper alloy which I think would be too soft......any ideas please?
It measures 28mm long by 9mm wide and is 6mm at its thickest end.

I wouldn't think so Paul, it looks to be purpose made for something. Smiley

It certainly looks like its been purposely made into a wedge.  Can I see strike marks on the thick end there?

Interesting object Richy. Looks Bronze Age but the material suggests Roman Or Georgian / Victorian. Well and truly stumped mate.

I may have an answer , copper wedges were used in the mining industry, as they produced no sparks when struck

also used to wedge in the end of pick axe handles and other similar tools to stop the tool falling off the wood.
