found this near in a field under a tree on an old bank running through a field with an old ruin cottage nearby which shows up on 1700 maps.
im pretty sure its a ring and its made of copper or bronze .i have tried to photograph the pattern which repeats around it. the ring has a seam at the back .
it is some sort of swirl with some wriggle lines above the swirl and a diagonal stripe between each pattern .Does anyone recognise the patter or have any idea on date?
it wasnt easy to photograph as i didnt want to clean it too much .should i clean it or would it be a bad thing (i know cleaning coins isnt a good thing not sure if the same rules apply to copper rings)

Hi Chantal,  I'd say the pattern is quite modern but I could be wrong.  I believe back in the 1700's copper alloy rings were what the commoners, like us, had.  Gold was only for the high upper class.

I'd leave it as it is. It'd be a shame to loose the pattern. Might be worth soaking it in some oil or something to save it rotting any more.  Nice find.

dunno val doesnt seem that corroded the surface is a little rough but very little came off when i cleaned it.there was a waxy crayon mid green green patina on a few places in patches but it came off when i gave it a hot water soak and toothbrush clean.
havnt got a clue about it and nobody else has suggested anything so i guess its a mystery one for my collection.i think you are right with the 1700s and the people who lived in the 2 room stone cottage would have been commoners .
